Two hurt in Peninsula wrecks still hospitalized

Two North Olympic Peninsula residents remained in intensive care in a Seattle hospital Wednesday, more than a week after they were hurt in unrelated wrecks.

Joseph L. Cvitkovich, 79, of Sequim remained in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The condition of Deborah DeLeo, 44, of Port Townsend was not available because of a request from DeLeo, the spokeswoman said.

On Sept. 7, Cvitkovich rode a 2002 Yamaha XVX11A motorcycle from Hooker Road into the U.S. Highway 101 intersection against a red light and was struck, the State Patrol said.

Cvitkovich was transported to Harborview for treatment.

Joy A. Newman, 37, of Sequim, who was driving the 1997 Geo Tracker eastbound on Highway 101 that struck Cvitkovich, declined treatment after the wreck, the State Patrol said.

Cvitkovich was wearing a helmet, and Newman was wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck, the State Patrol reported.

On Sept. 8, DeLeo was heading southbound on Discovery Road when her red Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck drifted across the oncoming lane and struck a telephone pole on the east side of the road, in front of Discovery Bay Camp & Missions Center.

The force of the impact broke loose one power line, which drooped to approximately 9 feet off the ground, and the truck rebounded backward 11 feet.

DeLeo was airlifted to Harborview and later told officers she had fallen asleep at the wheel.

It appeared that no drugs or alcohol were involved in either collision, according to State Patrol reports.
