PORT ANGELES — The city estimates it lost $25,000 because of the cancellation of two new residential developments.
In response, city officials are looking to charge a new fee on developers who do not complete their projects.
The developments have been canceled in the past six months because of poor “market conditions,” according to city staff.
They would have been located at Milwaukee Drive and 14th Street, and 12th and O streets, and totaled 42 lots.
No construction occurred at either site.
City spent $25,000
The Public Works and Utilities Department estimated that it spent $25,000 in staff time and the purchasing of materials to extend utilities to those developments.
Typically, those costs would be reimbursed through rates and transformer fees, Electrical Engineering Manager Terry Dahlquist said, but since the projects were canceled, the city lost those funds.
Cancelation fee
The proposed cancelation fee, if approved, would charge a developer $250 per lot if a project isn’t completed.
The city’s Utility Advisory Committee unanimously agreed Tuesday to recommend that the City Council creates the fee.
Seven subdivisions
City Planning Manager Sue Roberds estimated that the city has seven residential subdivisions under construction or going through the planning process with city staff.
