PORT ANGELES — Two fawns were trapped inside a fenced enclosure Sunday morning at Franklin Elementary School, one of many deer calls police have been receiving lately in Port Angeles.
The trapped fawns were reported by Jane Wise, Hamilton Parent Teacher Organization president, who was at the school to help prepare the building for students’ arrival Tuesday, the first day of school.
Wise told police that two mother deer were able to jump out of the enclosure, but their fawns couldn’t.
At one point, one of the fawn escaped, but the other was stuck inside after unsuccessfully trying to slip through an opening in the fence, Wise said.
When police arrived, the remaining fawn had visible shoulder injuries, said Cpl. Kevin Miller.
Miller, with Officer Andrew Neisinger, were able to startle it into finding a way out, as the mother deer waited nearby.
“They’ll find each other,” Miller said.
Miller said police respond to deer calls about twice a week.
One of the more unusual ones this year, Neisinger said, was at the Clallam County Fair.
A four-point buck had somehow managed to get into the food court area while people, including children, were in the area.
Neisinger was tasked with chasing the buck out of the area without the animal hurting anyone, he said.
