NEAH BAY — Two candidates are running for a seat on the Cape Flattery School District Board of Directors.

Dan Elvrum filed a declaration of candidacy and is a registered write-in candidate.

Before he filed, Heather Greene had been the only candidate for the position in the Nov. 5 election, now underway by mail.

The nonpartisan District 1 position on the School Board is for a four-year term to succeed long-term board member Shirley Johnson.

The district has about 40 teachers and about 470 students at schools in the Neah Bay and Clallam Bay areas.

In addition to the District 1 race between Elvrum and Greene, there is a second nonpartisan race for the District 3 seat. John Stubbs, the incumbent, is the only candidate for that position.

Greene, 39, is the human resources manager for the Makah tribe. She holds a bachelor’s degree in consumer science and business administration from the University of Arizona.

Elvrum, 57, is retired after working 35 years as a custodian and substitute bus driver for the Cape Flattery School District. He is a Neah Bay High School graduate.

“As a lifelong resident of the Neah Bay community, I have navigated the system as a student and have been employed by the Cape Flattery School District for the past 35 years,” Elvrum said.

“With my own children going through the system, I have a vested interest in participating in a positive decision-making process for our children now and in the future.

“Serving has been a dream of mine for many years.”

Said Greene:

“I chose to run for the School Board because of the children — not only our nine children who have attended schools in the district, but for all of the children in our communities.

“I strongly support education for our children and believe that all children deserve the opportunity to obtain an education that will prepare them for their future, no matter what road they choose to follow in their life.

“I have been involved in public service as a member of the Cape Flattery Schools IPP committee and as an adviser for the Neah Bay Little League Cheerleaders. I am also involved in my children’s school activities and fundraising events throughout the year.

“I believe that through continued support from the School Board that great work and success will continue in our schools.

“I would like to see that teachers have the resources they need to educate our children and enjoy their profession.

“With my education and experience in policy development and implementation strategies, human resource management, business administration and contract negotiation, I hope to have the opportunity to assist the Cape Flattery School District continue with the successful strides they have made.”
