Two candidate forums today; one Tuesday

Three candidate forums are scheduled this week on the North Olympic Peninsula, with two set today.

The League of Women Voters of Clallam County will host a forum for candidates running for the county races today.

The forum will be at 7 p.m. in the Port Angeles City Council Chambers, 321 E. Fifth St.

Also today, the Concerned Citizens of Clallam County, or FourC, will host four candidates for state Supreme Court and a presentation by syndicated talk radio show host Mike Siegel.

The forum will be at 7 p.m. at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.

Ballots for the Aug. 17 primary election will be mailed Wednesday. The top two vote-getters — regardless of political affiliation — will proceed to the Nov. 2 general election except in judicial races, where any candidate who receives more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary wins the office.

Invited to the League of Women Voters forum are Clallam County Commissioner District No. 3 candidates incumbent Mike Doherty, Democrat, and challengers Bill Peach and Robin Poole, Republicans.

Also scheduled are candidates for county director of community development: Alan Barnard, John Miller, Sheila Roark Miller, Sean Ryan and Tim Woolett.

Forum sponsors

The League of Women Voters forum will be co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Port Angeles radio station KONP, the Sequim Senior Center and the weekly Sequim Gazette newspaper.

For more information, phone Laura Lanka at 360-504-2247 or e-mail daisie53@wavecable.com.

At the FourC forum, Justice Richard Sanders, his opponent Charlie Wiggins, and Justice Jim Johnson and challenger Stanley Rumbaugh are scheduled to appear.

A question-and-answer session with predetermined, open-ended questions is planned.

After the program, attendees will have the opportunity to talk with the candidates.

During the second hour of the forum, Siegel will discuss the importance of the 2010 elections and how the residents of our community need to be involved with the process.

The meeting will be at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road.

Incumbent Jill Landes and challenger John Wood are scheduled to offer presentations followed by a question-and-answer period.
