PORT TOWNSEND — Port of Port Townsend officials on Tuesday opened two bids for an estimated $3.4 million project to rebuild the Point Hudson Marina and plan to decide upon a contractor in a week or two.
“I thought we might get three or maybe four, but two is good enough,” said Larry Crockett, Port of Port Townsend executive director.
The bids came from Caicos Corp. of Port Gamble and General Construction Company of Poulsbo.
Both had representatives at the bid opening in Port of Port Townsend Executive Director Larry Crockett’s office in the hospital building at Point Hudson.
Caicos Corp.’s base bid amount was $2.087 million plus another $1.385 million in alternatives and additives for a total of $3.472 million.
General Construction Company’s base bid amount was $3.56 million plus $1.57 million for alternatives and additives for a total of $5.13 million.
Crockett said commissioners will take a week or two to look at both bids before deciding which to accept.
A special meeting will probably be scheduled next week to award the contract, he said.
Crockett said the base bid will be the primary factor in the decision.
But another factor will be that Port lawyers ensure the bids are responsible and responsive to the Port’s needs.
“It’s not necessarily the lowest bidder,” Crockett said.
“Obviously this is a marina project. We can’t have an engineering company that builds roads.”
