PORT ANGELES — Assistant principals have been hired for Stevens Middle and Roosevelt Elementary schools.

One is a replacement, while the other is a new position.

Miriam Ransom replaces Renee Lancaster as the new Stevens Middle School assistant principal. Lancaster has accepted a position with the South Kitsap School District.

Jennifer Van De Wege, formerly a Sequim High School teacher, is the new Roosevelt Elementary assistant principal. The position was added because of higher enrollment at the school and such programs as special education and the highly capable program.

The school once had a dean of students. That position was discontinued.

Ransom most recently served as the dean of students/activities coordinator for the Bremerton School District. Before that, she was dean of students for the Moses Lake School District.

She also has taught science at the Clover Park School District, Kent School District and Duval Public Schools. While at Clover Park, she served as an administrative intern and was the diversity awareness coordinator.

Ransom received a master’s in educational administration from Grand Canyon University; a bachelor’s degree from Union University in Tennessee, where she majored in biology and minored in chemistry; and an associate’s equivalent degree from the University of Washington-Tacoma.

Ransom has a principal endorsement certificate as well as teaching certificates in chemistry, biology and elementary education.

“We are excited Miriam will join the Stevens staff and the school district administrative team,” said Chuck Lisk, assistant superintendent.

“She brings a strong background working with student leaders and will give continued good focus on helping all students make good choices.”

Van De Wege most recently taught science for ninth through 12th grades and served as Associated Student Body adviser, activity coordinator, Link Crew adviser and districtwide teacher on special assignment for the Sequim School District.

Before that, she taught science and social studies for the Sunnyside and Renton school districts.

Van De Wege received a master’s in teaching from Seattle University and a bachelor’s in sociology from the University of Washington.

She has a principal endorsement certificate, as well as teaching certificates in Earth sciences, history, science, social studies and sociology.

“The Roosevelt staff is excited to welcome Jennifer Van De Wege as our new assistant principal,” Principal Michelle Olsen said.

“She has a lot of enthusiasm and passion for students and families. She will work closely with me to provide instructional leadership across the building. We know that she will be a great addition to Roosevelt and our district given her love of learning and children.”

Van De Wege is married to Rep. Kevin Van De Wege of Sequim, who is running for the state Senate in the Nov. 8 general election.
