PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man who police say was surprised with a “Hi, how are you?” from the man whose house he was allegedly burglarizing is set to be arraigned Friday in Clallam County Superior Court.
Trever Lloyd Gallauher, 35, is expected to be arraigned on one count of residential burglary stemming from a break-in at a West 14th Street house Saturday.
Gallauher is set to appear alongside his alleged accomplice in the burglary, Jessica Lynn Young, 28, of Port Angeles, who has been charged with one count each of second-degree vehicle prowl and being an accomplice to a residential burglary.
Both were in the Clallam County jail Tuesday, Gallauher being held on $20,000 bail and Young on $10,000 bail.
Police gave this account of the burglary and the arrests of Gallauher and Young:
At about 10:35 a.m. Saturday, the renter of a house in the 2700 block of 14th Street called police to say he and his wife had come home to find a red Dodge pickup truck in the driveway and a woman, later identified as Young, sitting in it.
The man told police that he and his wife were in the process of moving out of the house.
The man asked the woman in the car what she was doing, and she said she was looking at the house as a possible rental, police said.
The man also noticed that his landlord’s car, which was parked on the house’s lawn, appeared to have been rifled through.
The man walked into the home and told police he found a man later identified as Gallauher attempting to remove speakers, a DVD player and a television set from the house.
The renter told police he seemed to surprise Gallauher and asked, “Hi, how are you?”
Gallauher replied, “I’m leaving,” and ran out the back door, leaving the electronics on the ground outside the house, police said.
The renter also noticed that the keys to his landlord’s car were missing from inside the house.
His wife, who was waiting outside the house, told police she saw the burglar run from the home, get into the Dodge truck and drive away quickly.
Detective Shane Martin, one of the officers dispatched to the burglary report, saw a red Dodge matching the description of the one seen at the 14th Street house heading east on 18th Street as he was headed to the home.
Martin had been given descriptions of the two people at the house and saw that a man and a woman matching them were in the truck as it passed him.
Martin, with the help of three other officers, pulled the truck over and arrested the pair.
Young was found with the car keys missing from the house.
In an interview with police, Gallauher said he had been inside the house but that he was only looking at it as a rental option.
Gallauher denied entering the home with the intent to steal anything and denied trying to remove the electronics.
Young also told police she and Gallauher were looking at the house as a rental option and denied taking part in any criminal activity.
