Truck rolls onto its side, spills logs on Port Angeles’ Marine Drive

PORT ANGELES — The driver was cited after a log truck rolled over on Marine Drive and spilled its trailer-load of alder logs last week.

Jeffrey Moore, 57, of Port Angeles was cited for driving too fast for conditions and having an expired commercial driver medical certificate after the single-vehicle wreck in the 700 block of West Marine Drive at about 10:08 a.m. Friday, said Brian Smith, Port Angeles deputy police chief.

The 1988 Kenworth log truck and trailer reportedly were traveling east on Marine Drive, Smith said.

Near the curve at Marine Drive’s intersection with East Boathaven Drive, Moore lost control of the fully loaded truck and drove into the oncoming lane of traffic, according to Officer Dallas Maynard’s investigation, Smith said.

Both truck and trailer eventually rolled onto the left side about 100 yards east of the corner.

The load of logs broke apart and spilled onto the roadway and onto the Discovery Trail sidewalk.

Damage to fence, sign

The truck damaged a Port of Port Angeles fence and snapped off a city “no parking” sign, Smith said, adding that the log truck appeared to be destroyed while the trailer did not seem too seriously damaged.

A commercial vehicle inspector from the State Patrol found a small amount of fluid leakage, which was cleaned up by Port of Port Angeles and Police Department personnel.

Workers with the port and B&D Inc. of Port Angeles removed the logs, pulled the truck and trailer upright, and cleared the roadway, Smith said.

The truck and trailer were towed into port property on the waterfront.

The Port Angeles Fire Department also responded.
