Troopers use CPR, naloxone to save a life

PORT TOWNSEND — State Patrol Troopers used CPR and department-issued naloxone to save the life of a 37-year-old Port Angeles man suffering from a drug overdose.

Members of the man’s family called for help at about 6:40 p.m. Friday, saying he had suffered a medical emergency, perhaps a drug overdose, and was unresponsive, said Trooper Chelsea A. Hodgson, State Patrol spokeswoman.

Port Townsend Troopers Jake Kennett and Casey Corey answered the call at the area of the Discovery Bay Store on U.S. Highway 101.

The man originally had been near Uncas Road but since the phone line disconnected several times, he was brought to the store, Hodgson said.

Kennett was first on the scene and found that the man was not breathing. He took over performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

When Corey arrived, he provided a dose of naloxone, a drug intended to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, while Kennett continued performing CPR.

Within four minutes, the Port Angeles man began to breathe and regain consciousness.

Medics arrived and requested a second dose of naloxone.

The man was transported to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend where he was recovering, the State Patrol said.

The State Patrol did not identify the man.

Other agencies involved include Discovery Bay Fire Engine 51, Quilcene Fire, East Jefferson Fire Medic 4, Port Ludlow Fire Medic 31 and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
