PORT ANGELES — City officials and Lower Elwha Klallam tribal leaders are in serious discussions about building a “megayacht” marina on Ediz Hook.
The proposed marina would be located on a 1,600-foot strip along the south side of Ediz Hook Road, just west of the Puget Sound Pilots’ Station near the entrance to Coast Guard base.
“This would put Port Angeles on the map,” said Don Frizzell of Port Angeles Marine Supply.
“It’s nice for everybody related to the marine industry.”
The marina would target 80-foot to 120-foot multi-million dollar “megayachts” that need as much as $200,000 in annual maintenance plus supplies for full-time crews, according to economic development officials.
The marina would be built in association with an Elwha “cultural facility such as a longhouse or a museum, together with associated interpretive and parking facilities,” City Economic Development Director Tim Smith told the City Council on Monday.
The marina would be financed by private backers working with the Lower Elwha tribe.
