Trial date set for Kelly in death of Port Townsend musician

PORT TOWNSEND — Adam Michael Kelly, who is charged with 10 felony counts including controlled substances homicide in the death of Port Townsend musician Jarrod Bramson, will stand trial in Jefferson County Superior Court on June 10-12.

Defense Counsel Richard Davies told Judge Keith Harper at Kelly’s arraignment continuance on Friday that he had the opportunity to speak with his client with respect to his right to file an affidavit of prejudice, which would disqualify the judge and perhaps prompt a move of the trial to another county.

At Kelly’s initial arraignment on April 12, Davies entered a plea of not guilty on all counts and indicated that he possibly would file such a document.

“I appreciate the court allowing me the opportunity to speak to Mr. Kelly with respect to his right to file an affidavit of prejudice,” Davies said.

“He is not going to do that so you can set dates on a 60-day clock from date of arraignment as he is held in Jefferson County Jail.”

Kelly, 38, appeared in court on a video monitor from jail.

Harper signed an order setting court dates within 60 days of last Friday.

In addition to the homicide charge, Kelly is charged with five counts of the sale, delivery or possession with intent to sell or deliver a legend drug in a school zone; manufacture or a counterfeit controlled substance in a school zone; possession of a punch die in a school zone; possession of a controlled substance — heroin— in a school zone; and unlawful use of a building for drug purposes in a school zone.

Kelly’s next court date will be an omnibus hearing at 8:30 a.m. May 10.

A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 31.

Bramson was 43 when he was pronounced dead of an apparent overdose after he was found unconscious in his vehicle in the parking lot of Jefferson Healthcare hospital just after 8 p.m. March 27, according to Port Townsend police.

He was in the passenger seat of his vehicle, its motor running. Hospital surveillance video shows Kelly and a woman walking away from the vehicle.

He was a well-known Port Townsend musician who played with his wife, Emily Madden, in the duo Solvents.

The coroner’s office said the cause of death is under investigation.

Kelly’s bail remains at $500,000. Davies asked the court at the initial hearing that bail be lowered to $250,000. Harper denied the motion.
