PORT ANGELES — This novelist has traveled to Sir Walter Scott’s home in Scotland and to Comanchero Forts in the Big Bend part of Texas.
She’s read letters from Gold Rush miners, dance hall girls, soldiers and pioneer women.
She’s ridden on dogsleds and helicopters, been a combat nurse during the Vietnam War, attended folk festivals and belly dancing classes — all in search of the sensations that bring stories to life.

So reports Elizabeth Ann Scarborough, the featured guest at this Tuesday night’s Story Swap at the Port Angeles Library.
Admission is free to the 7 p.m. gathering in the Raymond Carver Room at the library, 2210 S. Peabody St., and that includes refreshments during the 8 p.m. break.
Then, as is traditional, an open mic for all storytellers rounds out the evening by 9 p.m.
“The Stories Behind the Books: Adventures in Research” is the title of the presentation by Scarborough, the prolific author of books including The Healer’s War, her Nebula award-winning novel.
“I will share with the audience the real adventures, places and people behind the fictional stories I write,” she said.
Ranging stories
Those stories range from her Barque Cats series novels and the Acorna series novels, which Scarborough created with the late Irish writer Anne McCaffrey.
“Often my favorite part of writing books has been ferreting out information on the practical details,” Scarborough said, while “finding inspiration from people who’ve had some of the experiences I’m trying to write about.”
