FORKS — We’re entering the final week for entries in the Trashion Show, a furiously tacky event to be part of RainFest later this month.
The deadline to submit the concept for a piece of apparel made largely of trash — plastic bags and bottles, lids, what have you — is next Friday, April 10. Sarah Tucker, the artist, teacher, filmmaker and avid recycler of objects, is putting the Trashion Show together, so she’s the one to contact via Sarah@Tuckerart.com. Entrants are asked to email her a description of each work.
There’s no cost to enter the show, and artists of all ages are encouraged. And when the day — April 24 — arrives for the event, the designers and their own hand-picked trashion models will gather for the 7 p.m. show. It will take place at the new Rainforest Arts Center, 35 N. Forks Ave.
In hopes of providing inspiration, Tucker recently outfitted herself in trash.
She fashioned a jacket from recycled newspaper and added garbage-bag sleeves and a gift ribbon collar. Her headdress is snow white; Tucker admits she is “jazzed about the wig.”
The ingredients are “plastic grocery bags and that’s it, period. I knotted them and used their own tension to create a shape,” said the artist.
A panel of local judges will award prizes for works of art in various categories, Tucker said.
The Trashion Show is bookended by related events in and around Forks. The RainFest, which begins Friday, April 17, brings family activities, a quilt show, a dance and more to town; information awaits at the Forks Chamber of Commerce via 360-374-9253 and ForksWA.com.
Saturday, April 25, is the day of the Washington Coast Cleanup, with beach cleanups — and chances to collect ideas for future shows — scheduled along the Pacific Ocean and Strait of Juan de Fuca. To join one, visit www.coastsavers.org.
