PORT ANGELES — Growing tomatoes and potatoes, unusual food crops and slug control will be the topics during the Lunch in the Garden walk from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, June 13.
The free walk at the Fifth Street Community Garden, 328 E. Fifth St., is part of the educational series sponsored by Washington State University Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second Friday of each month through September.
Each month, Master Gardeners lead a fast-paced, one-hour walk through the community garden to show home gardeners what needs to be done in vegetable gardens at that time and what problems are likely to appear.
During these walks, Master Gardeners also answer questions and share recipes that use fresh local produce.
This month, veteran Master Gardeners Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton and Jeanette Stehr-Green will lead the walk.
Meggan Uecker, Clallam County waste reduction coordinator, will talk about composting and Hugelkultur, a European gardening technique that builds on a base of woody debris.
Moulton has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and is the Master Gardener Program coordinator.
Cain joined Master Gardeners in 2009 and was Clallam County Master Gardener Foundation president from 2011-13.
Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003 and was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year.
All three have been growing vegetables and herbs for many years.
The Fifth Street Community Garden is located just off Peabody Street, across from City Hall.
The garden includes more than 50 individuals plots that are each 9 feet by 10 feet.
The garden was developed on city property in 2011.
