Toastmasters host speaking contests

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Toastmasters are hosting an open house and impromptu speaking contest from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today.

Guests are welcome to participate in the contest on the second floor of Avamere/Seaport Landing at 1201 Hancock St.

The guest speaker will be Bill Thomas, a professional storyteller living in Port Angeles, who will share a rhyming story of “The Snow Shoe Race.”

“This is pure entertainment,” said Bill Cohill of the club. “It is a perfect time to come to be entertained or find out more about Toastmasters. Come alone or with your sweetheart.”

The week of Feb. 4-10 was proclaimed Toastmasters International Week by the City Council on Feb. 5.

The group meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Avamere.

Meetings are open to the public.

Toastmasters clubs are also in Sequim and Port Angeles.

Skwim Toastmasters meets from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at The Gathering Place in Sunland, 137 Fairway St.

Next Tuesday, it plans speaking contests at 7 p.m. at The Gathering Place.

The Port Angeles club will host prepared and spontaneous speaking opportunities Monday at Clallam Transit offices at 830 W. Lauridsen Blvd.

The club meets from 7 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. each Monday, except holidays, at the Clallam Transit offices.

The speech contests are in preparation for International and Evaluations Speech Contest at 6:30 p.m. March 2.

The free contests featuring the best speakers in the region will be at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, Chimacum.
