Tips no help in reported kidnapping case; authorities await DNA test results

CHIMACUM — Investigators have no leads on the identity of a man who a 16-year-old girl said kidnapped her at gunpoint south of Chimacum on Feb. 11.

“We don’t have anything new at this point,” said Jefferson County Sheriff Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Nole on Friday.

“We got a few tips, but they didn’t lead to anything.”

The girl, who was not identified because she is a minor, said she was kidnapped by a man after she had stopped to ask if he needed help.

She told investigators she couldn’t see most of his face because of a green-and-blue bandanna that covered his face from underneath the eyes down.

“There is the consensus where many people have asked, ‘Why would she do something that dumb, stopping for someone wearing a bandanna?’” Nole said.

“But she’s 16 years old.”

The girl, who was not hurt, told investigators that she stopped on Center Road about 7 miles south of Chimacum at about 4:15 p.m. when she saw a man she thought was injured, having what looked like a bloody bandage around one leg.

“She stopped and rolled down the window to see if he needed help, and he pulled out a gun,” Nole said.

“It’s not like she picked him up hitchhiking.”

The girl told police that the gunman forced her to drive several miles for about 30 minutes before pulling over on Dabob Post Office Road.

He fled when lights from another car approached, police said, and she fled in another direction, going to Coyle Road, where a woman motorist stopped and phoned 9-1-1, Nole said.

Nole said no one other than the girl reported seeing the assailant.

The girl, who was not hurt, described the kidnapper as a white man of unknown age, standing about 5 feet, 10 inches tall with dark eyebrows.

She said he wore a black beanie, a black hooded sweatshirt or hooded long-sleeved T-shirt and dark pants. pants that could have been blue jeans.

Nole said one tip pointed to a man in black pants and a hoodie in Chimacum but said it didn’t pan out “because that could apply to a lot of people.”

DNA samples were taken from the car but have not yet come back from the lab, Nole said.

Sheriff’s deputies plan to follow up with an additional interview with the girl, Nole said.

Nole said there were no other reported crimes in the area that could be connected to the kidnapper.

Anyone with information is asked to phone Nole or Detective Ryan Menday at 360-385-3831.
