PORT TOWNSEND — An early morning blaze left a transient woman without shelter after it destroyed the tiny house in which she was staying Wednesday.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire at one of the model homes at GreenPod Development, 1531 W. Sims Way, said Bill Beezley, spokesperson for East Jefferson Fire-Rescue.
The fire was reported at about 6:05 a.m. and was extinguished by 6:15 a.m., he said. The street was blocked until about 7:30 a.m., he said.
The 150-square-foot building “was burning pretty good when [firefighters] got there,” he said.
The transient woman who was staying in the building — with permission from the owner — was asleep when the fire started. She and her dog escaped without injury, he said.
Beezley said the cause of the fire is likely electrical in nature.
The only source of power in the building was an extension cord run into the house from outside.
He said the American Red Cross would provide the woman with shelter, likely for at least a couple of days.
