PORT ANGELES — Three neighborhood parks now have local sponsors.
The Port Angeles Sail and Paddle Club will maintain Sail & Paddle Park and Harborview Park on Ediz Hook, and Lincoln High School, the alternative school, will maintain Wolverton Park on West 11th Street.
The sponsorships were approved by the City Council’s Parks and Oversight Committee about six weeks ago, soon after the city’s new park sponsorship policy was approved by the council on April 7, said Richard Bonine, deputy parks director.
Both the club and school will receive training by the city next week on safety and maintenance before they begin their work.
As a sponsor, they will be responsible for maintaining the grounds, such as mowing grass and picking up trash, Bonine said.
These sponsorships don’t involve renaming the facilities, and didn’t need approval from the full City Council, he said.
The city’s park sponsorship policy was enacted in order to offset $45,000 in cuts to park maintenance this year.
