BRINNON — Three people suffered minor injuries when a car left the roadway and rolled, landing back upon its tires, on U.S. Highway 101 on Thursday afternoon, the Brinnon Fire Department said.
The driver suffered a hurt shoulder and the two woman traveling with him had minor injuries, Chief Patrick Nicholson said in a prepared statement.
The three Bremerton residents — described as elderly — were taken to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, Nicholson said.
He did not identify the three people.
The southbound lane at Milepost 310.2 near the Duckabush River bridge was blocked for 34 minutes, from 2:55 p.m. to 3:29 p.m., the state Department of Transportation said.
Nicholson said that the driver, who was in his 80s, told firefighters he had fallen asleep.
Firefighters and medics were called to the wreck at 2:21 p.m. after a 9-1-1 emergency call from a kayaker on the Hood Canal who saw the sedan leave the roadway just south of the Duckabush River Bridge, Nicholson said.
A second caller driving on the highway saw a dust cloud and also called 9-1-1, the fire chief added.
When firefighters arrived, the three were climbing out of the car that had reportedly rolled over but landed back on its tires off the roadway and down an embankment.
