Three accused of violating honors system at Sequim dairy

SEQUIM — Stealing milk money — or milk — doesn’t pay in Sequim, deputies said.

Three people have been accused of stealing milk or money from a Sequim dairy, violating the rules of an after-hours service that operated on the honors system.

The Dungeness Valley Creamery at 1915 Towne Road in Sequim has reported ongoing thefts of milk and money from its honors facility set up by the dairy owner, Ryan McCarthey, according to Sgt. Randy Pieper of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

Milk in 1-gallon and half-gallon containers is kept in a publicly accessible refrigerator at the dairy, and a container is provided to deposit money for the milk.

On Monday evening, Sheriff’s Deputy Amy Bundy arrested, cited and released a Sequim man, saying he had taken $5 from the milk money container.

On Tuesday, Gary Starks, 52, and Klell “Casey” Morgan, 64, both of Carlsborg, were booked into the county jail for investigation of third-degree theft, Pieper said.

They had two 1-gallon and three half-gallon containers of Dungeness Valley Creamery milk, he said.

During the booking process, a small amount of black tar heroin was found on Morgan, and he was also booked for felony possession of a controlled substance, Pieper said.

Neither Starks nor Morgan was listed as being in custody at the jail Wednesday.

McCarthey had tracked two men after he said he saw them take milk and money at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, Pieper said.

McCarthey told the Sheriff’s Office he found them at the Carlsborg Chevron station at 23 Hooker Road.

Sequim Police Officers John Southard and Rick Larsen detained the two at the station until deputies arrived, Pieper said.

About $3 in money from the change bin was not recovered, he said.
