PORT ANGELES — Hannah Howell is just 17, but she’s been playing with the Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble for a couple of years now.
A trombonist, she is one of the most talented musicians on campus, said David P. Jones, head of the college’s music department.
Music lovers will have a chance to hear Hannah in a big hall tonight (Monday evening): She’ll give her senior recital at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave., at 7 p.m.
Admission is free to the performance, which will feature Gabriel Fauré’s “Après un Rêve” (“After a Dream”), the third movement of Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto and Haydn’s Divertimento, among other works.
Hannah, who’s about to graduate from Port Angeles High, also will perform a few duets with euphonium player and fellow senior Sophy Doryland.
Peninsula College student Kyle Sholinder will be the piano accompanist in the recital, and the Port Angeles High School Brass Choir will join Hannah for Purcell’s “Trumpet Voluntary.”
Slide attracts
“I chose trombone because it is unique,” Hannah said, “in the fact that the pitch can be adjusted by the slide, and it has the potential to have so many different sounds.
“It can sound so beautiful some of the time and other times have a barky, big-band sound.”
After six years of playing this horn, “I have loved every moment exploring the instrument,” she said.
Hannah plans to attend Central Washington University, where her major will be trombone music performance.
