PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles teenager was in stable condition at Olympic Medical Center on Saturday after the Honda sedan he was riding in with his father was struck by a sport utility vehicle that crossed the centerline of Marine Drive on Thursday night.

Port Angeles police say 62-year-old Robert Allen Spencer of Port Angeles was driving a gray 2003 GMC Envoy SUV east on Marine Drive when it struck the driver’s side of the westbound silver 2001 Honda Civic driven by Thomas F. Hanley, 63.

The collision sent Hanley, of Port Angeles, and his passenger, 15-year-old Seamus Hanley, to OMC.

Police said the elder Hanley had a fractured sternum, and his son required emergency abdominal surgery.

The teenager was in stable condition as of Saturday, according to a hospital nursing supervisor, while his father had been treated and discharged.

The collision investigation, which involved State Patrol trooper assistance, partially blocked Marine Drive traffic until about 11:30 Thursday night, police said.

Spencer failed a field sobriety test at the scene of the wreck, police said, and told officers he had drunk between three and four 16-ounce beers at a nearby lounge before the collision.

Booked into jail

Spencer was booked into the Clallam County jail for investigation of two counts of alcohol-related vehicular assault and was no longer listed on the county jail roster Saturday morning.

He is expected to be charged in Clallam County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Officer Dallas Maynard gave this account of the wreck and Spencer’s arrest:

Spencer was headed east on Marine Drive near where the road meets West Boathaven Drive when he lost control of the SUV and crossed the centerline.

After the collision, the elder Hanley was found inside the Honda complaining of severe chest pain.

Hanley’s son, found on the sidewalk near the wreck, said he had severe pain in his chest and abdomen.

Both the GMC and the Honda were heavily damaged and had to be towed from the scene.
