PORT ANGELES — The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, hastened by good weather from their home port of Aberdeen, arrived in Port Angeles a day before schedule.
The ships docked at Port Angeles City Pier at about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Dock-side tours of the replicas of historic ships tied up at Port Angeles City Pier will be offered from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. today, as well as from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets are still available for all the North Olympic Peninsula battle sails, adventure sails and passages that can be booked between Port Angeles and Sequim, between Sequim and Port Ludlow, and between Port Ludlow and Friday Harbor.
Schedule of sailings
Three-hour battle sails in the Port Angeles Harbor — in which the two ships engage in mock warfare — are scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
A three-hour adventure sail on the Hawaiian Chieftain — which will feature demonstrations of tall ship handling, sea shanty singing and maritime storytelling — will leave City Pier at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The ships will leave for Sequim early Tuesday — after the crews take a day off on Monday — and offer on-board tours while docked at the John Wayne Marina next Wednesday, April 21.
Then, they will set sail for Port Ludlow, where they are expected to arrive at the Port Ludlow Marina, 1 Gull Drive, for three days April 23 through April 25.
Battle sails, adventure sails and dock-side tours are planned in Port Ludlow.
Battle sails are scheduled at 2 p.m. April 24 and 25, and an adventure sail is scheduled aboard the Lady Washington at 10 a.m. April 25.
Dock-side walk-on tours of the ships in Port Ludlow will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 23 and form 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 24 and 25.

Good weather
The ships had been expected the two ships to dock in Port Angeles late Wednesday, but unusually good weather speeded their arrival, said Joel Follansbee, media director for the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority in Aberdeen, which owns the ships.
He learned of the early arrival late Tuesday morning.
The ships’s last visit was in 2008.
Launched in 1989, the Lady Washington is a full-size wooden replica of a brig that accompanied Capt. Robert Gray’s expedition to the Pacific Northwest in 1788.
The official ship of the state of Washington, the modern Lady Washington has appeared in several movies, including the 2003 “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
The Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical 19th century merchant trader.
Launched in 1988, the steel-hulled vessel was built for trade in the Hawaiian Islands.
An on-board gift shop will be open during the tours.
