Tacoma man arrested after reports of burglaries in Oil City area near mouth of Hoh River

FORKS — A 21-year-old Tacoma man was arrested Saturday for investigation of burglary and possession of stolen property, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

Matthew Loewe was transported from the Forks jail to the Jefferson County jail Sunday.

He was not listed on the jail roster Wednesday.

A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to the remote Oil City area near the mouth of the Hoh River on Saturday afternoon after a resident reported a person carrying a large bag walking from a neighboring property, Detective Ryan Menday said.

Deputies met with the property owner and determined that a residence and travel trailer had been burglarized.

Loewe, who is described as a transient, was seen walking along Oil City Road a short time later. He was found to be in possession of several items stolen in the alleged burglary, Menday said.

“The next day, deputies located Loewe’s makeshift campsite along the Hoh River, where they discovered additional items stolen from the burglary,” Menday said in a Tuesday news release.

Investigators believe Loewe is responsible for three additional burglaries to cabins in the Oil City area over the past three months, during which time a firearm was stolen, Menday said.
