Taco fundraiser to help pay for teen’s headstone

PORT ANGELES — Family members of a Port Angeles teenager who died of a suspected heroin overdose last month have scheduled a fundraising meal today to help pay for a headstone for his resting place at Mount Angeles Memorial Park.

Relatives of 17-year-old Maceo Niehaus, 17, who was found dead of a suspected heroin overdose May 14 at a home in the 700 block of South Ennis Street, will host a fundraising meal of Indian tacos today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 463 Stratton Road on the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe reservation, said Miranda Cedar, Maceo’s mother.

Each taco dish will be $7, Cedar said, while Clallam County residents can pay $10 and have the meal delivered.

Delivery orders can be placed by calling Jaime Johnson, a family member organizing the fundraiser, at 360-912-3381, Cedar added.

Many donations

Cedar said most Indian taco makings, which include hamburger meat and vegetables, have been donated for the occasion.

“We have had pretty much everything donated to us, which is a blessing,” Cedar said, adding that she’d also like to thank tribal staff for their donations.

Ricki Niehaus, Maceo’s grandmother, said Cedar has about $1,300 in a memorial fund set up at Cedar’s bank to pay for the headstone, while Ricki Niehaus has $300 that will be used for the headstone from a fund she set up to pay for Maceo’s funeral.

Cedar estimated Maceo’s headstone will cost between $2,500 and $2,700.

“We’re looking at another $1,000 we’re trying to raise,” Cedar said.

Maceo was laid to rest May 23 at Mount Angeles Memorial Park after a funeral attended by an estimated 300 family and friends.

David Zavodny, 18, remains in the Clallam County jail for investigation of one count of providing premises for drug trafficking after he allegedly gave Maceo the heroin that is thought to have contributed to Maceo’s death while the two were at the Ennis Street home where Zavodny had been living.
