SWIMMING AND DIVING: Port Angeles’ Macias notches two second-place finishes; other area state results

FEDERAL WAY — Port Angeles senior John Macias earned runner-up finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle at the Class 2A state championship meet at King County Aquatic Center.

The Roughriders placed eighth in the team competition with 115 points. Anacortes won the state championship with 226 points.

Macias also swam in two relay finals Saturday along with Tristin Butler, Jay Liang and Wei-Yan Fu.

Port Angeles’ 200 medley relay team finished fifth in a tightly contested final. In the 400 free relay, the Riders came in sixth.

Individually, Butler reached the finals in two events, placing 11th in the 500 freestyle and 12th in the 200 individual medley.

Liang placed 16th in the latter event. He also took 18th in Friday’s 100 breaststroke preliminaries, narrowly missing the finals.

Fu took 14th in the 100 butterfly finals. He finished 22nd in the preliminaries for the 50 freestyle.

In the 1-meter dive, Port Angeles junior Scott Methner placed seventh in the finals, while Crescent’s Lucas DeFrang was eighth and Sequim freshman Mathew Craig finished 15th.

DeFrang was seventh after the preliminaries and tied for seventh after Friday’ semifinals.

Methner moved up from 14th in the prelims to ninth in the semifinals, and moved up two more spots to seventh during Saturday’s finals.

Craig started at 20th in the preliminaries, but moved up to 16th place in the semifinals to qualify for the finals, where he gained one more position to finish 15th..

“For his first year of diving, he has performed very well and we look forward to state trips each of the next three years with him,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

Port Angeles’ Vincent Ioffrida was 23rd in the diving preliminaries.

The Riders’ other relay, the 200 freestyle relay swam by Dario Andereozzi, Kody Kuch, Karsten Hertzog and Milo Atwater, came in 19th during the preliminaries.

Hertzog also claimed 21st in the 200 freestyle preliminaries, while Atwater was 23rd.

Those two also swam in the 500 freestyle prelims, with Hertzog talking 21st and Atwater coming in 24th.

Sequim’s Eric Prosser closed out his high school career with a 14th-place showing in the 100 backstroke.

“He swam a [personal-]best time in the 100 back during prelims to move up to 14th place and qualify for finals,” Moats said.

“His swim in the 100 back in finals was not a [personal-]best time, but he was able to remain in 14th place.

“This is the first year he has been able to swim in the state finals. He was very happy and we are all very proud of him.”

Prosser also took 22nd in the 200 individual medley preliminaries.
