Swan School students raise funds for D.C. trip

PORT TOWNSEND — Fifth- and sixth-grade students at Swan School are sponsoring a raffle to raise funds for a trip to Washington, D.C., in March.

The students also will stop at two of Virginia’s historical sites, Jamestown and colonial Williamsburg, and visit the U.S. Capitol and other legislative offices.

Seven kids will take the trip, teacher Melinda Pongrey said.

“It will be great for the kids to see the real stuff of history,” she said.

“By seeing the real Declaration of Independence, they will have a relationship to history that will carry them through their learning years.”

Pongrey hopes to raise at least $2,000 from the raffle — enough to pay for one child’s expenses.

The remainder has come from parents and other sources, she said.

Tickets are $1 each or eight for $5.

On March 10, the drawing will select winners for three prizes:

• The Earth Package includes a $50 Henery Garden Center Gift Certificate, yardscape lighting package by Toland Home & Garden (worth $200) and three hours of yardwork.

• The Local Package includes a night at the Honeymoon Cabin in Treefrog Woods, worth $95; an Evergreen Fitness certificate worth $70; a $30 Pane d’Amore gift certificate; a Mt. Townsend Creamery $30 certificate; and a $25 Cape Cleare Salmon certificate.

• The Night on the Town package includes dinner for two at the Silverwater Cafe; spa time at Posh Salon; Rose Theater tickets for two, plus refreshments; a $30 jewelry piece; and baby-sitting service for the evening.

Raffle tickets will be sold after school today at Henery Hardware, 218 W. Sims Way and Friday morning at the Food Co-op, 414 Kearney St.
