PORT TOWNSEND — A 71-year old Port Townsend man was flown to Harborview Medical Center after a sport utility vehicle struck his motorized wheelchair outside a restaurant on Sims Way, a fire department spokesman said.
Witnesses told East Jefferson Fire Rescue personnel that the man flew 12 feet through the air before he landed on the pavement, said Bill Beezley, fire department spokesman.
The man, who was not identified, was struck at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday while he was traveling through the parking lot on the north side of Fiesta Mexican Restaurant, Beezley said.
Fire Chief Gordon Pomeroy had the man transported to Harborview for evaluation of possible back and neck injuries.

he driver, a 72-year-old Port Townsend woman who also was not identified, told firefighters that she had been preparing to turn left toward the entrance of the parking lot off of West Sims Way and was looking left when the man motored in front of her Isuzu SUV from the right and was struck.
