PORT ANGELES — An early morning brush fire considered suspicious threatened a home and sent up 8-foot flames before firefighters quelled it early Sunday.
A caller told emergency dispatchers at 2:54 a.m. that the fire at 43 Lower Dam Road in the Elwha Dam RV Park was within 100 feet of the caller’s residence and spreading.
Eight firefighters from Clallam Fire District No. 2 found towering flames emanating from a large slash pile, Fire Chief Sam Phillips said.
Firefighters had the fire under control within an hour and estimated the size to be less than 1 acre, Phillips said.
No structures were damaged, and no firefighters were injured.
“The origin of this fire is suspicious,” Phillips said. “There were no natural causes for the fire.”
“Additionally, it began in an area where there had been no human work activity for several days,” he said, adding that the fire district was assisted by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
A statewide burn ban, effective until Sept. 30, is in effect except in certain national park areas and other exempt campgrounds, Phillips said.
