A man who was wounded during a Jan. 19 shoot-out with a Clallam County deputy was released from a Seattle hospital on Wednesday afternoon and went immediately to jail.
Scott Lincoln Davis, 59, of Silverdale, arrived at the Clallam County jail at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict said. He was expected to be booked later that night, a jail spokeswoman said.
The State Patrol, which escorted Davis to jail after guarding him at Harborview Medical Center, said he would be booked on investigation of first-degree assault with no bail.
He is expected to be formally charged within the next two days, Benedict said.
Deputy Bill Cortani, 41, of Forks shot Davis in the stomach and left arm, returning fire after Davis shot him in the arm and hip with a handgun, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department said.
Cortani was attempting to arrest Davis on investigation of trespassing in a cabin near Sekiu after the Sheriff’s Department was told that the man was squatting in a beachfront cabin there.
Both were treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Deputy recovering
Cortani was released the day after the shoot-out and is recovering in his Forks home.
Davis underwent several surgeries before his release on Wednesday, the State Patrol said.
Benedict said that Cortani will be off duty for one or two more weeks.
“He’s doing great,” Benedict said. “He has an indomitable spirit.”
Benedict has said that formal charges, which will be up to County Prosecuting Attorney Deb Kelly, could include first-degree burglary, first-degree assault and attempted murder.
Deputies were alerted to Davis’ presence in the cabin by owners Dave and Sue Sperline of Redmond, who had been told by an employee of the neighboring Ray’s Grocery, 7621 state Highway 112, that a man had been in the store saying that he was going to stay in the cabin.
Cortani was sent to the cabin, where, Benedict said, Davis shot him with a handgun, fled the cabin to his car, grabbed a 12-gauge shotgun and fired at Cortani again, and Cortani returned the gunfire, shooting Davis several times.
