PORT ANGELES — A leading educator and an exemplary student in the Port Angeles School District each will get their hands on a free vehicle at the end of the school year.
Superintendent Marc Jackson announced the award to district employees at an all-staff meeting at Port Angeles High School on Wednesday morning.
Who will get them
The vehicles, donated by Howie Ruddell, owner of Ruddell Auto Mall at 110 S. Golf Course Road, will be leased at the end of the 2014-15 school year to a teacher selected as teacher of the year and given to a high school student with exemplary attendance, Jackson said.
Teachers from each of the district’s schools will nominate a teacher as their teacher of the year, and those teachers will enter into a drawing for the free one-year lease of a vehicle from Ruddell’s dealership, he said.
Similarly, all high school students with a perfect attendance record will be entered into a drawing for ownership of a vehicle.
Model unknown
The model of vehicle for either contest has not yet been selected.
“Our kids win by being in school,” Jackson said.
Jackson said the competition is not a perfect attendance contest as it allows for up to five excused absences, but students in the program cannot fail in any class for the year.
Students can also be up to a week late arriving for the start of the school year, which begins Tuesday, he said.
Smaller drawings
At the end of each quarter, smaller drawings for computers and other items will be held for those students who had top attendance for that quarter, he said.
Stevens Middle School students with exemplary attendance will be entered into a drawing for bicycles, a skateboard and other prizes donated by local merchants.
Middle schools
Jackson said the exact requirements for the middle school program have not yet been determined but are expected to be similar to those of the high school.
Sound Bikes & Kayaks and Bike Garage, both of Port Angeles, each donated a bicycle to the program.
North By Northwest Surf Co. donated a skateboard.
