Summer burn bans begin this Monday

Burn bans will take effect in Clallam and Jefferson counties Monday.

Clallam County’s burn ban will run through Oct. 1 unless conditions warrant an earlier closure, said Sheila Roark Miller, county fire marshal and Department of Community Development.

The burn ban applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires, which are limited to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.

The initial burn ban throughout Jefferson Fire-Rescue District will run through Sept. 30, and the ban may be extended if weather conditions warrant, said Bill Beezley, department spokesman.

Outdoor yard debris burning will be prohibited in the district.

No open burning is ever allowed within the city limit of Port Townsend or in the urban growth area of Irondale/Port Hadlock.

Fine for each violation

During the period of the burn ban, violators may be assessed fines of up to $14,915 per day for each violation.

They also may be held responsible for the expense of putting out the fire, which can cost thousands of dollars, Beezley said.
