Summer almost over for kids; it’s back to school time

Summer’s really over this week. Most of the kids go back to school.

Public and private schools across the North Olympic Peninsula resume classes this week for the 2008-2009 school year after a summer break.

A few await a later date. The Quilcene School District and the Brinnon School both plan a Sept. 8 start date, while the private Jefferson Community School in Port Townsend plans to begin at 9 a.m. the same day, with an opening convocation at 4 p.m. the day before.

One private school is already in session. The Cedarbrook Adventist Christian School in Port Hadlock opened its doors last Monday (Aug. 25).

But most pick up again next week.

Tuesday will be the first day of school for the public school districts of Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Chimacum, and Crescent, which is in Joyce, and for the private Olympic Range Carden Academy in Port Townsend.

Wednesday will be the first day classes resume at the public school districts of Sequim and Quillayute Valley, which is in Forks, as well as the private Swan School of Port Townsend and the Olympic Christian School of Port Angeles.

Thursday will be the day that the Clallam Bay and Neah Bay schools of the Cape Flattery School District welcome returning students

Peninsula College will begin its fall semester on Sept. 22.

The Port Angeles School district is starting all-day kindergarten this year, but the full-day schedule will not kick in until Thursday.

Before then, all-day kindergarten students will have abbreviated schedules during an orientation on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending upon the school, said Tina Smith O’Hara, district spokeswoman.

“We are looking forward to starting full-day kindergarten, and still have some space available for a few more kindergarteners,” Superintendent Gary Cohn said in a written statement.

For more information, phone or check the Web sites of schools and districts. Start times, when available also are listed.

Some private school listed could not be reached for comment on start dates.
