Subtle signs of addiction, abuse detailed in Port Townsend event

PORT TOWNSEND — The Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble will present “Drinkin’ & Druggin’: Good Times, Abuse or Addiction?,” an interactive performance and community dialogue at the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St., this Tuesday.

Admission is by donation to the 7 p.m. show, and all community members are invited.

In this event, designed to reveal the less visible aspects of alcohol and other drug abuse, people can simply watch and listen, or they can take part in the dialogue by sharing personal stories, struggles and experiences.

Daily inspiration

Lois Barnett, a Jefferson County Substance Abuse Advisory Board member and the lead organizer of the event, lost her first husband, her sister and a dear friend to alcohol or other drug abuse.

“Now, addiction and the disease of alcoholism inspire me daily,” she said, “to be part of the community healing necessary to support the recovery process for those who need it.

Tuesday’s performance “asks us all the question of whether it’s a ‘good time, abuse or addiction’ so we can learn how to make these critical distinctions for ourselves and support others along the way.”

Program for change

Now in its 12th season, the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble is a troupe of local actors and activists ages 14 to 66.

As a program of Port Townsend’s Mandala Center for Change, the ensemble seeks to spark dialogue and action toward a more just and joyous world for all people, according to www.MandalaforChange.com.

For information about the event Tuesday, see the above website, phone Mandala Center co-director Marc Weinblatt at 360-344-3435 or phone Barnett at the county Substance Abuse Advisory Board at 360-385-6877.
