QUILCENE — Six Quilcene students and two teachers were transported to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend Thursday morning as a precaution after a school bus pulled in front of a car.
Winnie Stephens, the bus driver, was cited for failing to yield after a stop. The 60-year-old Quilcene woman was not injured.
The bus, which was occupied by eight students, pulled onto U.S. Highway 101 southbound from Leland Valley Road West, and moved into the path of an oncoming 1978 Mercedes-Benz at about 7:30 a.m., the State Patrol said.
Krista Hand, State Patrol spokeswoman, said injuries to both the students in the bus and the two teachers in the Mercedes were minor.
The ambulance transport was merely a precautionary action, she said.
“There were some arm injuries and complaints about bruises,” Hand said.
“No abrasions and no breaks. Some of them were just sore.”
The other two students in the bus were released to their parents.
Both the driver of the Mercedes Benz — Jeff Youde, 39, of Port Townsend, who taught English at Quilcene High School — and Quilcene special education teacher Rene Olson, who was carpooling with Youde from Port Townsend, were discharged soon after being taken to Jefferson Healthcare, a hospital spokesman said.
Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision, the State Patrol said.
