Strong winds blow across Peninsula

A surge of strong winds knocked out power to several North Olympic Peninsula communities Tuesday night and forced the closing of the Coast Guard’s Port Angeles station. – Coast Guard Petty Officer Justin Fink said.

By 8 p.m. the winds had subsided to about 20 mph, Fink said.

The station was expected to reopen this morning.

Coast Guard equipment elsewhere was available to respond to marine emergencies, Petty Officer Zach Greenlee said.

The storm caused power outages in southern Port Angeles and the eastern part of Clallam County.

About 200 customers in the Diamond Point area between Sequim and Port Townsend were without power for a short period of time.

Clallam County Public Utility District dispatcher Dave Proebstel said power in the Diamond Point area was due to be restored about 9 p.m.

About a dozen customers on Pierson Road west of Sequim also were without power. Proebstel said that outage was expected to last until midnight.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Department was notified of trees being blown down around Sequim and west of Port Angeles. No damage or injuries were reported.
