Storyteller to speak on pitfalls of wanting in free show Tuesday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Eva Abram is going to talk about what happens when we want too much, when our wanting gets out of hand.

Fortunately, her talk is free and part of the Story Swap at the Port Angeles Library on Tuesday night.

The Story People of Clallam County have invited Abram, a Seattle storyteller, over for the swap, which will start at 7 p.m. in the Raymond Carver Room at the library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

“The Pitfalls of Wanting” is the theme of the night chosen by Abram, who unspools folk tales from various cultures in order to show our human connections: our foibles, our curiosity and our humor.

The Louisiana-born Abram, who’s lived in Seattle for 40 years now, also tells of historical characters and happenings with the common theme, she said, of: “We are all connected; we all affect each other.”

“If people want to hear good stories, and get away from the hustle and bustle of life,” Abram said, “if they want to experience emotion, laughter and community,” they ought to come to the swap — and for that matter, to the Forest Storytelling Festival at Peninsula College running Friday through Sunday.

For details about the festival’s workshops, concerts and featured tellers from across the country, visit ClallamStoryPeople.org, phone 360-417-5031 or come to Tuesday’s swap at the library.

After Abram’s hour-long set, refreshments will be served during intermission, and then all storytellers will have a chance to take the open mic from 8:15 p.m. until about 9 p.m.

To find out more about the Story Swaps held every second Tuesday of the month, see the Clallam Story People website or phone 360-452-8092.
