PORT ANGELES – What’s in a name? A lot, apparently. The Port Angeles School Board is seeking recommendations from its transition teams whether to change the names of the present Stevens Middle School and/or Roosevelt Middle School for the next school year.
The Elementary and Middle School Transition Teams were set up to explore all of the issues surrounding the moving of students and grade realignment in fall 2007, after Fairview Elementary School is closed at the end of this school year.
Stevens, 1139 W. 14th St., is named after Isaac I. Stevens, the first territorial governor of Washington.
Roosevelt, 106 Monroe Road, is the latest school campus named after Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States who first designated the Olympics as a national monument, the precursor to Olympic National Park.
The old high school and junior high school once located on the grounds now taken by Port Angeles City Hall and Clallam County Courthouse parking were named after Roosevelt.
