PORT ANGELES — Stevens Middle School students continued their annual tradition of making a commitment to be free of drugs and alcohol during the school’s Red Ribbon program this week.
Red Ribbon program events, planned by the school’s leadership students, were scheduled throughout the week.
The culmination of students’ commitment occurred Tuesday night when students, parents, friends and school staff pledged to avoid the use of drugs and alcohol by throwing symbolic sticks into a bonfire.
Prior to the ceremony, the Stevens Middle School’s jazz band, choir and orchestra performed for a packed crowd in the gymnasium.
Principal Chuck Lisk said that, as of Wednesday, about 550 students of the 612 enrolled in the school as of Oct. 1 have signed their names to a “pledge to be drug free” banner, which will remain available throughout the week.
Each day has a different theme.
The theme for today is “Senior Citizen Day and Nerd Day,” in which students are encouraged to “dress up like your grandparents and come to school.”
Friday will be “Halloween and Decades Day.”
The Red Ribbon program focuses on drug and alcohol prevention.
