CLALLAM BAY — Two State Patrol troopers were stranded between a section of fast-moving water Tuesday night on State Route 112 near milepost 25.
It was part of a widespread flooding on the North Olympic Peninsula and throughout western Washington.
The state Department of Transportation closed state Highway 110 near Ballard Road between Forks and LaPush because of flooding at 1:40 a.m. Crews were on the scene Wednesday afternoon but the road was closed in both directions.
State Highway 112 was closed in both directions from Milepost 12 to Milepost 13 near Clallam Bay at 3:46 a.m. Also closed is Highway 112 from Milepost 23 to Milepost 29.
Late Tuesday, Troopers Travis Beebe and Michael Simonson responded to a motorist who was stuck in two to three feet of fast-moving water on Highway 112 near Milepost 25. A passer-by with a large four-wheel-drive truck stopped to offer assistance.
Beebe waded into waist-deep water to hook a tow strap to the stranded driver’s vehicle, which was pulled to safety.
As the troopers tried to leave the area, they realized they were stranded on a half-mile section of roadway. The trooper reported that the flood covered about a mile of roadway with very swift moving water about three feet deep.
Krista Hedstrom, State Patrol spokeswoman, said the troopers were able to leave area at about 10:13 a.m.
“We were coordinating with the Department of Transportation. They sent out a front-loader and the troopers left their cars at a residence,” Hedstrom said.
