SEQUIM — State Rep. Steve Tharinger will receive a Municipal Champion award from the Association of Washington Cities at the Sept. 22 meeting of the Sequim City Council.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Sequim Transit Center, at 190 W. Cedar St.

“Representative Tharinger is receiving the award because he went above and beyond in his support for cities, including being the prime sponsor of our priority legislation to restore the growth in liquor profits that were redirected from cities to the state to deal with state budget shortfalls,” said Dave Williams, director of government relations for the Association of Washington Cities.

“Steve was a strong advocate for us on the proposal, and also collaborated with AWC in developing information for his use in caucus to help inform his colleagues of the importance of sharing both liquor revenues and any potential new money from recreational marijuana sales,” Williams said.

This is the first year that AWC is recognizing legislators with the Municipal Champions awards as part of “Operation: Strong Cities” an effort to reinforce the relationships between cities and the state.

The Association of Washington Cities is a private, nonprofit, non-partisan corporation that represents cities and towns before the state Legislature, the state executive branch and with regulatory agencies. The city of Sequim is a member.

Tharinger represents the 24th Legislative District, which covers Clallam and Jefferson counties and part of Grays Harbor County.
