State Patrol: Motorcyclist strikes pickup truck from behind on Highway 112

Port Angeles man in serious condition in Seattle hospital after wreck near Freshwater Bay Road.

PORT ANGELES — A motorcylist was in serious condition but improving Monday afternoon at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after striking a pickup truck Sunday near Port Angeles, State Patrol and hospital officials said Monday.

State Patrol said Vincent L. Boyd, 65, of Port Angeles was following too closely at 12:52 p.m. Sunday when his 2006 Harley Davidson Road King Classic ran into a 1993 Toyota pickup traveling in the same direction on state Highway 112 at Freshwater Bay Road, 7 miles west of Port Angeles.

The pickup was driven by Richard E. Stroupe, 82, of Port Angeles who had slowed down for traffic while the two were travelling westbound before Boyd struck the rear of his vehicle, the State Patrol said.

Stroupe was not injured in the mishap.

Reportable damage

His pickup had reportable damage and was driven from the scene, the State Patrol said.

Boyd’s motorcycle was totaled, the State Patrol said.

The State Patrol said a charge was pending against Boyd.

Boyd was wearing a helmet that was not compliant with United States Department of Transportation specifications, the State Patrol said.

Boyd was first transported to Olympic Medical Center.

An Olympic Medical Center spokesman said Boyd was stabilized before being transferred.
