State ferries schedules include traffic

OLYMPIA — Washington State Ferries has added color-coded sailing schedules to its website, www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries, that pinpoint the least and most congested sailing times for passengers who take their cars on ferries.

Said David Moseley, assistant secretary for the state ferries system: “Ideally, it will allow ferry customers to avoid long waits by choosing a sailing time that’s historically less congested.”

Ferry officials said the new schedule should particularly help those on the Edmonds-Kingston route, which is often congested Friday nights and weekends.

The new schedule pinpoints the peak travel times.

The schedules are available for all routes except the San Juan Islands, Tahlequah and Vashon Island.

The state ferries system expects to have them for all routes by this summer.

The color-coded schedules are available on the right side of each route schedule page at the WSF website beneath a tab titled “Best Travel Times.”

Kingston-Edmonds ferry survey

OLYMPIA — State ferry officials are asking for public comment by Friday on a proposal that will end after-midnight Saturday sailings on the Edmonds-Kingston route this summer.

The proposal also adds earlier sailings.

It exchanges the present 12:25 a.m. sailing from Kingston with an earlier 10 p.m. sailing, while a 10:45 a.m. sailing from Edmonds replaces a later 1 a.m. sailing.

“Alternative late-night service to Kitsap County is available on the Seattle-Bainbridge Island route, with the last sailing from Seattle at 2:10 a.m. Saturday night-Sunday morning,” the state ferry system said in a statement.

The state ferries system is asking customers to express their preference for either the current schedule or the proposed revision by emailing wsfplanning@wsdot.wa.gov.
