State disability council to meet in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — The state Developmental Disabilities Council will conduct its next quarterly meeting in Port Angeles.

The council will meet from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the Port Angeles Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St.

To join the meeting online, call Linda West at 360-586-3572 or email linda.west@ddc.wa.gov.

The council advocates, promotes and implements policies and practices that create pathways to meaningful, integrated and productive lives for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The council’s 27 members are appointed by the governor and include people with developmental disabilities, family members of people with developmental disabilities, state agency representatives and other community partners.

“The Washington State Developmental Disabilities Council exists to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families,” said Kevin Vargas, the state plan coordinator. “While we may not be widely known, we’ve been advocating for nearly 50 years.

“By holding council meetings in communities outside of the Puget Sound corridor, we are able to create relationships and enhance awareness of the council and the concerns of people with IDD and their families.”

In addition to the two-day meeting, Clallam Mosaic will host an after-hours social from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at 129 W. First St., Port Angeles.

During the social, the nonprofit will screen two short films, “Being Seen” and “One Question,” followed by a discussion about the films, what makes a whole life and the Medicaid Matters campaign.
