PORT ANGELES — The clothes, food and information about resources will come with a smile and “thank you.”
Voices for Veterans — a nonprofit in Clallam County — will host Stand Down 2017 in Port Angeles from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.
The stand down at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., will offer necessities and information to all veterans.
It aims to provide direct services and connect veterans to more than 20 different organizations.
Veterans served in particular include homeless veterans, veterans in need and immediate dependent family members.
A stand-down is a one-day operation offered three times a year in May, July and October on the North Olympic Peninsula. The event in Forks was May 3; the Port Townsend event was July 31.
Services range from medical and dental to housing, employment, veteran benefits, counseling, haircuts, food, pet supplies and clothing.
Veterans get answers to their questions and obtain resources they might not have known were available to them.
All funding is received through donations and grants. Money goes directly to support the veterans and stand-downs, event organizers say; no salaries are paid.
Clallam and Jefferson Transit buses will offer free transportation to the stand-down.
While it is a special day for veterans in need, stand-down organizers say it’s also a day for volunteers who want to give back and say thanks.
