PORT ANGELES — This weekend’s sprint boat races at the Extreme Sports Park ended with the co-owner of the venue allegedly the victim of an assault, the Port Angeles police chief said Tuesday.
Dan Morrison, co-owner with wife, Kelie Morrison, of the boat park off Edgewood Drive in west Port Angeles, reportedly was assaulted at about 2 a.m. Sunday, Port Angeles Police Chief Terry Gallagher said.
Morrison was trying to stop the occupants of a vehicle that was being driven erratically in the park’s campground when those in the car got out and reportedly assaulted him, Gallagher said.
The number of alleged assailants was not known Tuesday.
Port Angeles police are investigating the incident as a misdemeanor assault, Gallagher said.
As of Tuesday, police had interviewed several people in the alleged assault but had not arrested anyone, Gallagher said.
Gallagher did not know the severity of the alleged assault.
Brian Smith, Port Angeles deputy police chief, said a third party reported the incident early Sunday to police officers on the night shift.
“[Officers] became aware of it after it happened,” Smith said.
Neither Dan Morrison nor his wife could be reached for comment Tuesday.
A representative of Olympic Medical Center said Tuesday that Dan Morrison was not on the patient roster.
The Extreme Sports Park at 2917 W. Edgewood Drive in west Port Angeles played host Saturday to the U.S. Sprint Boat Association’s National Finals Championship.
Boat drivers from across the U.S. and Canada competed in the finals, which are referred to as the Super Bowl of sprint boat races.
Kelie Morrison estimated about 9,500 people attended the races.
