AUBURN — Sequim will send seven athletes to this weekend’s Class 2A state tournament after a strong showing at the West Central District tournament.
The Wolves girls tennis team claimed the district team title at last weekend’s competition after going one-two in the doubles tournament.
The tandem of Blair Maloney and Kyla Hall beat teammates Angela Richards and Diana Earl 7-6, 6-2 in the championship match to earn their second straight state berth.
Richards and Early also earned a spot in state this Friday and Saturday at the University of Washington in Seattle with the second-place finish.
“They both had a really good tournament,” Sequim tennis coach John Textor said of his doubles teams.
The Sequim boys ended up sending three to state after Mallory Maloney and Reed Gunstone took third in the doubles competition and Ettore Scudo third in singles. It will also be their second straight state trip.
Maloney and Gunstone were bounced to the consolation bracket after falling to Interlake’s Jason Sheih and Nikita Nosov 7-6, 6-0. Yet they responded with back-to-back wins, including a 6-1, 6-1 triumph, to claim third.
Things weren’t quite as easy for Scudo, who had to survive a 3 ½-hour marathon in the third-place match, which he eventually won 7-5, 3-6, 6-4
“It was just crazy,” Textor said. “Every point lasted 20 to 40 rallies. They were just both very determined and both being very careful not to make mistakes.”
