SPORTS: Port Townsend, Chimacum split boys and girls basketball games

PORT TOWNSEND — Landon Cray and Quinn Eldridge combined for 42 points to spark the Chimacum boys basketball team to a 17-point nonleague victory over archrival Port Townsend on Saturday night.

Add in Rafael Pagasian’s 12 points and the Cowboys’ top three scorers contributed 54 points to Chimacum’s 64-47 win.

It was a split for the day for the two archrival schools as Port Townsend’s girls basketball team beat the Cowboys 60-49 earlier Saturday evening.

In the boys game, though, the Cowboys’ top three scorers on the season were the difference.

“Chimacum’s Big Three scored the majority of their points,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.

“You have to give them credit. They came into our gym and shot the ball well and made their free throws.”

Chimacum made 16 of 19 free throws while the Redskins couldn’t buy a basket at the free-throw line, making just 6 of 15.

Cray tied for game high-scoring honors with 22 points while Eldridge sank 20.

Port Townsend’s Kyle Kelly, a 6-foot junior guard, tied Cray for top scoring honors with 22.

Paul Spaltenstein also scored in double figures for the Redskins with 10 points.

Both teams had good long-range shooting nights with the Cowboys knocking down eight 3-pointers and the Redskins right behind with seven 3s.

Eldridge and Kelly both led the way with five 3-pointers each.

Nine wins for Cowboys

Chimacum improved to 9-5 overall (3-3 in Nisqually League) while Port Townsend fell to 2-11 overall (1-9 in Olympic League).

The Cowboys led the entire way, 21-14 at the end of the first quarter, 30-22 at halftime and 50-36 heading into the final period.

But there was very good news for the Redskins. They had only nine turnovers for a team that has only two seniors and three juniors.

Sophomores dominate the varsity with six players.

“We turned over the ball a lot less than we normally do,” Webster said.

“For a young team, we are improving.”

The Redskins next play at North Kitsap (3-7, 3-10) in Poulsbo on Tuesday while the Cowboys next host Orting (0-6, 0-13) on Tuesday.

The Redskins had a 23-15 advantage in the fourth to win by 11 points.

“We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well [Saturday night],” Randy Maag said.
