SPORTS: Port Angeles wrestling team pins North Mason to stay perfect on year

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles wrestling still is perfect on the year after pinning North Mason 49-18 in Olympic League dual-meet action Wednesday night.

The Roughriders lost only four matches on the night to improve to 2-0 in league and 6-0 overall.

Port Angeles had four falls in the match as Brady Anderson pinned Matt Zink in 1:18 at 106 pounds, Sam Burton had a pin in 1:28 at 138, Brian Cristion pinned Chase Davis in 2:19 at 182 and Zach Grall pinned Tommy Marsh in 1:52 at 195.

Kacee Garner had a major decision, 13-1, at 160 pounds for the Riders while other winners by decision were Josh Basden at 113, Blake Meldrum at 126 and Nick Lasorsa at 170.

Basden beat Cameron Nieson 10-5 while Meldrum continued his strong performance at the Battle for the Axe to defeat Mark Phillips 7-5 and Lasorsa decisioned Tevyn Goodwin 10-7.

Strong season

Lasorsa also is having a strong season, dominating opposition at the Battle for the Axe.

The Riders next will wrestle in the six-team Rainshadow Tournament at archrival Sequim on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Kingston 48,

Sequim 25

SEQUIM — The Wolves couldn’t quite top the 11th-ranked Buccaneers in Wednesday night’s Olympic League dual.

Two forfeits and one disqualification helped keep Sequim (0-2 in league) from the upset, despite the Wolves coming up with three pins on the night.

Among the Wolves coming away with falls were Royhan Agostine at 113 pounds, Cody Field at 145 and Dakota Hinton at 170.

Cole Morgan also earned a 3-0 decision victory at 126 while Austin Leach won a 12-3 decision at 182.

“The kids wrestled well, I was pleased,” Sequim coach Len Borchers said.

“Some of the stuff we’ve been working on they executed. Kingston is tough. Hanging with them is good.”

Sequim next hosts the six-team Rainshadow Invitational on Saturday.

Klahowya 30,

Port Townsend 29

BREMERTON — The Redskins came within a hair of topping a depleted Klahowya team Wednesday night in Olympic League action.

Going up against an Eagles squad missing several of its top wrestlers, Port Townsend was able to come up with five pins and six wins overall.

Still, that wasn’t quite enough to give the Redskins (0-2 in league) their first league dual victory of the season.

“They wrestled really well today,” Port Townsend coach Stephen Grimm said.

“We’re a young team, but they are really starting to come around now. The kids who are getting the wins now are the ones who were dedicating themselves in the gym all Christmas break.

“That’s what you like to see.”

Redskins who came away with pins were Shae Shoop at 106, Forrest Piatt at 145, Silas Kinnaman at 152, Ty Leeper at 170 and Dylan Kelly at 195.

Dillon Ralls earned a win with a 17-2 major decision at 138.

Port Townsend will next compete at the Rainshadow Invitational in Sequim on Saturday.

RENTON — The Roughriders squeezed past the Indians with a dramatic series of plays in the closing moments of Wednesday night’s nonleague game.

Shayla Northern tied the game with a 3-pointer with six seconds to go, then Madison Hinrichs stole the ensuing inbound pass and fed the ball to Paxton Rodocker, who was fouled.

Rodocker knocked down both free throws to seal the win and give the Riders some serious momentum going into Friday’s home showdown with Kingston (6-1 in league).

“It was a see-saw, back-and-forth game,” Port Angeles coach Michael Poindexter said. “We played a very mature fourth quarter, and that is what did it for us.”

The Riders improved to 6-4 overall and are 5-2 in league play.
